The Decalogue

Ten Commandments TabletsExodus 19:1-8 Exodus 20:1-17

“The Decalogue”

How many of The Ten Commandments can you name? Put to the test, Americans recalled the 7 ingredients of a McDonald’s Big Mac hamburger and members of TV’s “The Brady Bunch” (that old show) more easily than the Bible’s Ten Commandments.   A survey by Kelton Research found 80 percent of 1,000 respondents could name the burger’s primary ingredient — two all-beef patties — but less than 6 in 10 knew the commandment “thou shalt not kill.” Less than half of respondents — 45 percent — could recall the commandment “honor thy father and mother” but 62 percent knew the Big Mac has a pickle.   Now it’s true that the 10 commandments are usually not advertised in commercials. And apparently it is now unconstitutional to officially display them in our public schools and in our courtrooms. Even in the church they are sometimes ignored or interpreted to mean something different other than the plain meaning of the text. But Jesus said, “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.”   “The Decalogue.”  These are the 10 words of God.   Let us pray…   We have all heard one or more of the following statements: If it feels good, do it. What’s true for you may not be true for me. There are no objective absolutes, just differing opinions. One person’s interpretation of the Bible and God is just as good as another.
